Men work on the job more hours than women. Among full-time workers, men put in 8.2 hours, women work 7.8 hours. Amongst part-timers, men work 45 minutes more than women.
When it comes to housework (including landscaping), women out-work guys. 83 percent of women and only 66 percent of men spend the average doing house-hold chores. On the days they do housework, women work 2.7 hours, men log 2.2. hours.
They broke down “chores” from “meals,” and discovered that on the average day only 20 percent of men do cleaning or laundry. But when it comes to meals, 37 percent of men get involved in food preparation or cleanup.
Child care is still the woman’s domain. On the average weekday, women spend 1.2 hours providing physical care for children (bathing, feeding). Men do the nurturing thing a mere 23 minutes on the average day.
Women are also more involved in religious activities and volunteering, spending 11 percent of their day, compared to 7 percent of the average man’s day.
Besides hours on the clock, where else to men lead? In leisure time, men log 5.7 hours a day watching TV, socializing or exercising. Women kick their feet up only five hours a day.
Here’s what I do with this kind of data. First, I don’t feel bad about it. I do my part, and my wife appreciates my contribution to the family’s bottom line. We’ve heard too much male bashing, so don’t sweat it, bro. Honor your wife and kids, and they’ll love you. (I like vacuuming and ironing more than her anyway.)
I also make sure that I’m “above average.” That natural competitiveness is a guy thing (and identified by Promise Keepers as part of the “masculine context”). If men spend 2.2. hours a week working around the house, I’ll go for 2.5 hours. If men care for their kids 23 minutes a day, I’ll go for a half hour. That’s me, “above average Joe Six-Pack.”
